Rock fishing continues to be one of New Zealand's most dangerous pastimes. Between 2013 to 2017, 27 fishers lost their lives in NZ. Land based fishing drownings have included: rock fishing, net fishing and crab fishing.
The land based fishing project is a collaborative programme with Surf Lifesaving Northern, Auckland Council and
New Zealand Police with the purpose of:
• Water safety awareness, skill and knowledge for at risk drowning groups specifically men
• Understanding the importance of wearing a lifejacket when land based fishing
• Developing safer boating and land based fishing practices in at risk groups
• Increased focus on raising water safety awareness with the older population (65 years+)
