Scientific Name: Gambusia affinis
Released in New Zealand in the 1930s. Fast prolific breeders and one pregnant female can start a whole population. They can survive in poor quality water. Found in Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay.

Impact
  • They are very aggressive and frequently attack native fish species
  • High density populations reduce galaxiids in shallow water
  • Compete with native whitebait, bullies and eels, all feed on mosquito larvae.
